Three Scenarios for the Future of Generative AI

NYU graduate students imagine the future of GenAI in 2026 using their understanding of current trends in technology, business, social values, and geopolitics.

The Scenarios:

  1. A Creation Story [3:15 minute mark]

Floods of content lower the earning power of creative professionals. This scenario considers the intertwined fates of an artist, a lawyer, and a CEO. While the CEO deals with a copyright lawsuit, the artist is forced to take their craft offline and the lawyer contemplates their own job security.

  2. Digi-Detectives [21:29 minute mark]

Misinformation is everywhere, fostering a society without trust. This scenario examines the ways GenAI will impact different age groups. Professionals and students will have to expand their tech literacy to ensure their own work is not perpetuating misinformation.

  3. Your Title Here [36:45 minute mark]

With high personalization, people rely on AI more than themselves. As AI personal assistants become more readily available, this scenario imagines how their voices might start to overtake our own, leading to a loss of genuine human interactions.

This Fall 2023 "Future of Media" class was taught at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program by Art Kleiner and Juliette Powell.

Kleiner and Powell employ similar future scenario predictions in KPI’s AI Advisory practices.
