Nvidia Eyes Return to Record as AI Spending Bonanza Continues (Yahoo!Finance)

Billions of dollars continue to be spent on the artificial intelligence market. Nvidia’s results next week will provide further clarity on the demand for AI if they reenter record territory. “We’re nowhere near close to finishing the build out of AI infrastructure, and that gives you a very good line of sight in terms of the growth you can expect over the coming years,” said Erik Swords, lead portfolio manager at Voya Investment Management.

In a leaked recording, Amazon cloud chief tells employees that most developers could stop coding soon as AI takes over (BusinessInsider)

During an internal fireside chat, Amazon Web Services’ CEO Matt Garman warned software engineers that they need to develop skills beyond coding. "If you go forward 24 months from now, or some amount of time — I can't exactly predict where it is — it's possible that most developers are not coding," said Garman. He defined developers not as people who know how to code, but as people who innovate for the sake of the end user. As AI takes over coding tasks, developers should “get more in tune with what our customers need and what the actual end thing is that we're going to try to go build, because that's going to be more and more of what the work is."

OpenAI Introduces GPT-4o Fine-Tuning, Enhancing AI’s Role in Business (PYMNTS)

Developers can now fine-tune GPT-4o, OpenAI’s most advanced language model, to suit specific business needs. Fine-tuning will allow developers to customize a pretrained AI model “to get higher performance at a lower cost for their specific use cases.” For example, retail companies can fine-tune GPT-4o to understand product descriptions and customer inquiries better. During the promotional period, a mini version of GPT-4o is available with 2 million free training tokens per day. The regular GPT-4o training costs $25 per million tokens.

Trump’s post of fake Taylor Swift endorsement is his latest embrace of AI-generated images (AP News)

Just before the Democratic National Convention, Donald Trump reposted an image of Taylor Swift in an Uncle Sam outfit and accepted her endorsement for his campaign. The problem is, she never gave him an endorsement. This was an AI-generated photo. Trump has shared a lot of AI-generated content lately, including an image of Vice President Kamala Harris at a communist rally and a video of him dancing with Elon Musk. “The AI-generated deepfakes of Taylor Swift are yet another example of AI’s power to create misinformation that deceives and defrauds voters,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, an advocacy group pushing for AI regulation.

Company that sent AI calls mimicking Joe Biden to New Hampshire voters agrees to pay $1 million fine (ABCNews)

On Wednesday, Lingo Telecom agreed to pay a $1 million fine for transmitting robocalls to New Hampshire voters in January. The calls used artificial intelligence to mimic President Joe Biden’s voice falsely suggesting that voting in the state’s presidential primary would preclude them from casting ballots in the November general election. Steve Kramer, a political consultant who orchestrated the calls, still faces a proposed $6 million FCC fine as well as criminal charges.

OpenAI exec says California’s AI safety bill might slow progress (The Verge)

OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon says that a new AI safety bill under consideration in California could slow progress and cause companies to leave the state. Kwon believes that AI regulation should be left to the federal government. In response to Kwon’s letter, California State Sen. Scott Wiener issued a press release where he replied “As I’ve stated repeatedly, I agree that ideally Congress would handle this. However, Congress has not done so, and we are skeptical Congress will do so.” The new bill would require precautions like pre-deployment safety testing, add whistleblower protections for employees of AI labs, and give the California Attorney General the power to take legal action if AI models cause harm.

Google’s AI ‘Reimagine’ tool helped us add wrecks, disasters, and corpses to our photos (The Verge)

Google’s newest phone, the Pixel 9, comes with a new tool called Reimagine. Reimagine has all the features of previous editors like selecting and erasing parts of a scene, but with an AI twist. You can now type in a text prompt to generate something in the image with very convincing results. The lighting, shadows, and perspective of the new object usually match the original photo. There are obvious guardrails in place, but with the right wording you can generate an array of disturbing or violent images. While “creative prompting” to get these results is a violation of the policies, that doesn’t mean it’s going to stop someone from doing it and spreading the content as authentic. Reimagine does not watermark the images as AI-generated.

Epic Systems is building more than 100 new AI features for doctors and patients. (CNBC)

At their annual User’s Group Meeting (UGM), many of Epic’s announcements centered around integrating artificial intelligence into their products. Epic is a health-care software giant whose technology is used in thousands of U.S. hospitals and clinics. The company houses medical records for more than 280 million individuals. By the end of the year, Epic said its generative AI will help doctor’s revise their messages in a way patients will understand, queue orders for prescriptions and labs, and streamline the insurance process. By the end of 2025, it will be able to pull relevant information for doctor’s when responding to a patient’s message and calculate wound measurements from images. They also have a staff scheduling application in the works.
